The Pharos Arts Foundation together with the Goethe-Institut and Institut Francais jointly present one of the leading German-French Jazz Duos with eminent German saxophonist Christof Lauer and one of the most renowned French percussionists, Patrice Heral. The concert celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Elysee-Treaty on Friendship and Cooperation between Germany and France.

Patrice Héral / percussion
The French jazz percussionist Patrice Héral studied with Alain Joule and Barre Phillips although he has been largely self-taught. Until 1990 he was part of the street theatre group Compagnie Malabar Paillasson and the band Tropique du Cancer. Since 1990 he worked in Vienna , where he collaborated with saxophonist George Graff, the accordionist Otto Lechner (with whom he also founded the Vienna Zieharmoniker), the comedian Josef Hader and Otto Grünmandl. He accompanied musicians such as Max Nagl , João de Bruço , Toni Burger, Paul Urbanek, Karl Sayer, and Alegre Corrêa. Héral also participated in multi-ethnic projects with the Sudanese Abdel Karim al Khâbli and singer Timna Brauer and toured Russia, in 1994, with singer Sainkho Namtchylak. Since 1992 he has been working with the Italian singer Etta Scollo.

In the 1990s, Patrice Héral shuttled between Vienna, Berlin , Oslo and his hometown and collaborated with Gérard Pansanel, Doudou Gouirand, Frédéric Monino, Michel Marre, Terje Rypdal, Tore Brunborg , Kirsten Bratt Mountain, Nguyên Lê , Ferenc Snétberger, Steve Swallow, Ralph Towner, John Taylor and Maria Pia De Vito, amongst others. He then collaborated in a trio with Arild Andersen and Markus Stockhausen, as well as with Arild Andersen and Carsten Dahl. Between 2005 and 2007 he was a member of the Orchestre National de Jazz by Franck Tortiller, and he is a member of the Pago Libre .

Christof Lauer / saxophone
The German jazz tenor saxophonist (Tenorsaxophon) Christof Lauer is one the most important European jazz saxophonists. At age 6, he started playing the piano, which he studied at the conservatoire in Frankfurt on the Main. In 1971 he changed to the tenor saxophone, which he studied with Dieter Glawischnig at the Graz College of Music.

In 1979 Christof Lauer became a member of the jazz ensemble of the Hessian Radio Broadcasting and played in the jazz band Voices with Heinz Sauer, Bob Degen and Ralph Hübner. In 1993 he was a soloist to the NDR-Big Band, in 1994 he became a member of the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble in which he took the place left by Charlie Mariano, and in 1996 he joined the Albert Mangelsdorff quintet. He has also been member of the Hamburg NDR Radio Orchestra.

His projects include collaboration with musicians such as Palle Danielsson, Carla Bley, Michel Godard, Volker Kriegel, Michel Portal, Maria Joao, Anthony Cox, Gary Husband, Alphonse Mouzon, and Peter Erskine. Lauer was affected in his musical development by Free jazz and the music of John Coltrane and he has been influenced by musicians such as Stan Getz and Albert Ayler.

Christof Lauer recorded albums with Michel Godard and Mark Ducret, as well as with Jens Thomas, Gyr Lysne and other artists.
